Today, we release a new country/regional souvenir for India. If you have found a geocache in India, you automatically receive the souvenir on your profile.
India is a subcontinent and country in Southern Asia. The regions of India are vast and diverse ranging from plateaus and dusty deserts to snow capped mountains and lush plains. It is also the second most populous country in the world and home to this week’s Geocache of the Week.
GC6CX04 invites you to explore the Golconda Fort in the area of Greater Hyderabad. This historic citadel is located in the vast expanse of southern India, south of the Vindhyas mountains and composed mostly of grey granite. Granite, a very hard type of rock and valuable resource found in this area, was formed from the slow crystallization of cooling magma below Earth’s surface. Even the famous Himalayas, aged 40-60 million years old, are significantly younger than the rocks found in this region. Geologists date these ancient rocks to when the Earth’s crust solidified. That was about 2.5 billion years ago – way before any dinosaur walked this planet.
Walk through the historic site to see all that this cache has to offer. There are old structures made from these prehistoric materials and informational plaques to learn from on your quest for this find. Porphyritic granites are the dominant rock type around Hyderabad. These rocks play an integral role in not only architecture, but also preserving and nurturing the ecological balance of the region. They even helped to create the natural drainage system. Monsoons happen seasonally in this area, and these rocks ensure that valuable soil and vegetation does not get washed away.
As this is an EarthCache, cachers and hopeful geologists must answer questions about the boulders, granite, and rock formations that they come across in the many Waypoints. You’ll be required to search for different locations around the area, so be sure to pack supportive footwear and plenty of water when hunting this month’s country souvenir, India, and our Geocache of the Week: Rocks of Hyderabad – Golconda.
We know geocachers love country and regional souvenirs and we do too! We are releasing at least one new country/regional souvenir per month starting in January 2019. These new souvenirs will be featured alongside Geocaches of the Week in each region and shared on the third Wednesday of each month. Check out all of the Geocaching souvenirs here.
