Today, we released a new country/regional souvenir for San Marino. If you have found a geocache in San Marino, you automatically receive the souvenir on your profile.

Just northeast of the Apennine Mountains, which stretch the length of the Italian Peninsula, one can discover the “Most Serene Republic of San Marino!” San Marino is a European microstate enclaved by Italy. Being completely surrounded by Italy plays a tremendous role in the nation’s rich cultural and historical development.

San Marino stretches a total area of 61.2² km (23.6 sq mi), and it only takes a day trip to visit its most popular landmarks and, of course, geocaches. San Marino’s Historic Centre and Mount Titano, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, is home to three iconic medieval towers. Guaita, the oldest tower, dates back to the 11th century. Cesta, the second tower, is from the 13th century. Lastly, Montale, the smallest of the three towers, was completed in the 14th century. Before rushing to find the caches hidden in and around these towers, be advised that there’s an entry fee.

Although almost all of Mount Titano is driveable, many visitors opt for scenic hikes to reach the peaks. Standing at 739 meters (2,425 ft) above sea level, Mount Titano is the tallest mountain in San Marino, but very little hiking experience and gear is actually required to scale it. However you decide to scale Mount Titano, the magnificent views and towers that greet you at the summit are unforgettable. After taking in your surroundings, make sure you haven’t lost your pen—it’s time to start geocaching!

Montale may be the smallest and newest tower, but it’s actually home to San Marino’s very first geocache, GCNTKF, which was placed in May of 2005 by the_bau_team. From this vantage point, you can see the entirety of the Riviera Romagnola, and on clear days, the coast of Croatia.

Moving northwest towards Cesta, one can discover a micro-sized geocache, GC6J5KE, placed by Biciclaru without having to actually enter the tower. As captivating as the second tower may be, you’ll want to stay alert and exercise stealth in between the waves of muggles for this find.

A trip to the top of Mount Titano wouldn’t be complete without basking in the glory of Guaita. To help you accomplish this, bgecco has placed GC6P601 within the tower. The largest and most iconic of the three towers, Guaita is very likely to be the highlight of your San Marino experience. Take your time here—this last stop in San Marino requires driving a little ways into the countryside.

Our Geocache of the Week, GC350VD, La ferrovia Fantasma – The ghost railway, another hide by the_bau_team, takes us to the northeast corner of San Marino to the castello of Serravalle. This is a Multi-Cache with two stages, just a few kilometers apart, dedicated to the Rimini-San Marino railway, which was operational for twelve years until it was bombed in World War II. The eerie atmosphere and surrealism of the static passenger cars make it easy to understand how this cache has become San Marino’s most Favorited geocache of all time.

In spite of its small geographic area, San Marino is rich in culture, history, scenic vistas, and geocaches. However you spend your time in this republic, you’re guaranteed to make memories that last a lifetime.
