With a geocache in nearly every country worldwide, it’s amazing to think of all the places you can geocache! In this edition of Geocache of the Week, we travel to a country we haven’t highlighted in the past: Trinidad and Tobago!
Sail with us to find a beloved Traditional Cache: The Holidays- Fort King George (GC51TQN)!
At its shortest distance, Trinidad and Tobago is only a mere 9 miles (14 km) from the South American continent. Formed by two main islands, the lesser-known of the two, Tobago, is considerably smaller in area and population. To visit this Caribbean gem, sail 23 miles (37 km) from Trinidad to the island.
When you arrive in Tobago, a wave of tranquility washes over you. The hustle and bustle of Port of Spain, the capital, gives way to tranquil seas and skies, the perfect venue to explore and geocache. To find GC51TQN, head to the island’s highest point at Fort King George.
As you make your way to the fort, you take a look at the cache page. The cache owner of GC51TQN, Trinidadian, shares the history of European powers and the fort, as they compare it to a large game of “musical chairs.” This history provides a rich setting for exploration. To locate the cache, go outside the stone walls and into the nature below. Don’t be surprised if you come face-to-face with a cannon!
As you descend from the fort, the Geocaching® mobile app leads you to a small alcove. With confirmation that you’ve made it to the GZ, use your hands to search in places high and low, as the difficulty rating of 2.5 means it won’t be a simple find. Armed with a hint from the cache owner, you spot something slightly amiss: it’s the cache!
The history of this place, paired with the view and the addition of your name to the log, makes this a memorable experience. After you sign your name, place it back for the next geocacher to find in this unique place. Now with one more smiley, you make your way back into town to enjoy one last activity in Tobago: relaxing!
Before you head back to the bustling island of Trinidad, a well-deserved break is in order. With beach time often comes reflection, including questions like, “Would I have come to this incredible place without geocaching?” But try as we might to want to understand everything; some questions are best left unanswered.
