Each week we highlight special geocaches from around the world — and what a year it has been. We have seen a wonderful array of geocaches this year from across the world ranging from a Letterbox Hybrid hidden in Taipei, a magical Harry Potter adventure in Germany, an epic canyon Multi-Cache in Spain, a legendary sword-in-the-stone Minnesota, plus dozens of other captivating caches. We took a look at which geocaches you liked most on our blog, Facebook, and Twitter and assembled a top 10 list to share. Tell us which geocaches you liked most! 1.) Raiders of the Lost Cache – GC2HN2H Admit it. Deep down, you want to be Indiana Jones. We ALL want to be Indiana Jones. Full-time treasure hunter, part-time archeologist, and darn handy with a whip — what geocacher hasn't gotten the Raiders of the Lost Ark theme song stuck in their head? Well good news, adventure seekers. Recently, declassified files, photos, and GPS information has allowed the discovery of a new location for The Ark of the Covenant. It now resides in a large cave, deep in the woods of Pennsylvania! 2.) Taipei Beimen Post Office / 臺北北門郵局 – GC3NXZV Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom can keep geocachers away from this Letterbox Hybrid. Well, that's not completely true since this cache is only accessible during business hours, but you catch the drift. The posted coordinates take you just outside the Taipei Beimen Post Office. There, you must locate a small film canister with a key inside. Take that very special key, head inside the post office, and locate mailbox 59535. Inside you will find a manila envelope filled with a logbook, letterbox stamp, SWAG, and hopefully more than a few trackables. 3.) The British Library – GC2M0AF What do the Beatles manuscripts, the Magna Carta, and geocaching have in common? They're all housed in London's world-famous British Library. The difficulty three, terrain one geocache was placed with the permission of the British Library. Geocachers explore several key locations in the library and discover clues in paintings, plaques and signs. 4.) Harry Potter's Abenteuer – GC6ACTD If you've ever read any of the Harry Potter books or seen any of the movies, you'll know non-magical people are called muggles. You may also know in the geocaching community, muggles are non-geocachers. This is not the only thing that geocachers and Harry Potter lovers have in common. They both share the same excitement in creating magic and discovery in everyday life. Now, you too can discover what it's like to be a Hogwarts student while on the epic Multi-Cache journey to find Harry Potter's Abenteuer. 5.) L'aiguille du midi – GC1Y014 Afraid of heights? Then this Geocache of the Week might give you the chills! To find L'aiguille du midi, you must first visit Chamonix, an adventurer seeker's heaven! Steep peaks and endless views in the heart of The Alps draw visitors from all over the world to experience this awe-inspiring town and scenery. At 3,842m (12,605 ft), the Aiguille du Midi and it's laid-out terraces offer a 360° view of all the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps. A 20-minute ride in the Aiguille du Midi cable car will deliver you to the summit terrace where you will have a clear view of Mont Blanc. 6.) GeoTourSwe – The Southern – GC6KP0K A historic building? Great views of the city? Daring feats of adventure? This geocache has it all! The cache is located in Örebro's southern water tower, which provided water for the city from 1887 until 1958 when it was replaced by a mushroom-shaped tower. Although no longer active, it provides the perfect setting for this T5 Mystery Cache. Where is the cache, you ask? To find out, you'll have to strap on a harness and get ready for a thrilling adventure. 7.) Masca – Los Gigantes – Masca – a real adventure – GC10A3T This T5 Multi-Cache, located in Spain's Canary Islands, will send you on a three-hour long trek through a basaltic ravine to an isolated beach. The journey begins in Masca, a small mountain village on the island of Tenerife. Home to only 90 inhabitants, the village is situated 650 meters (2130 feet) above sea level in the Macizo de Teno mountains. 8.) Jumanji – GC39CM6 “In the Jungle you must wait, until the dice read 5 or 8.” Deep in the untamed wilderness of the Netherlands exists a legendary geocache. The 21 stages of this Multi-Cache bring you through the game of Jumanji. Ward off giant wasps, escape from pesky monkeys, and play the game as you journey towards the Final stage — an official Jumanji game board. Do you dare to take the bait, to learn your geocaching fate? 9.) The sword in the stone – GC27N0W According to legend, cache owner Diehard50248 used his magical powers to place the sword in the stone and boldly stated, “Who so pulleth out this sword of this stone is rightwise ‘born to cache.' A short journey into the woods brings you to the cache. Only those who are worthy will solve the enigma of pulling the sword from the stone. Twist and turn the sword and pull with all your might. If you are lucky the sword will release itself from the stone. Bring glory to your name by signing the logbook and claiming your smiley. 10.) NO LIMIT – Centrale d'Oxygène Liquide – GC1GZ8H Have you ever wanted to feel like a super spy while geocaching? You may get your chance in Audun-Le-Tiche, Luxembourg. The Mystery Cache NO LIMIT – Centrale d'Oxygène Liquide looks like a secret base in a James Bond movie. It is one of Luxembourg's top-favorited geocaches and is the country's most-found Mystery Cache. Do you have a geocache in mind for Geocache of the Week? The German cacher finds a treasured geocoin that the Canadian lost a year earlier on a muddy and flooded trail. At the end, one of them sums up the experience, “Clothing is wet, but spirits are high. Mission accomplished.” 15 geocaches. 15 countries. 22 hours and 25 minutes. Geotrip '17. 15 geocaches. 15 countries. 22 hours and 25 minutes. Geotrip '17.On a single day in April, a group of Finnish geocachers found geocaches in 15 different countries: Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, and Poland. In 2011, a group of Dutch geocachers did this route in just under 24 hours. This new group beat them by an hour and a half! It should be noted that the Geotrip'17 team drove according to speed limits and took their time to find each cache and log them. In order to achieve this, they preselected low difficulty caches with a few backups just in case. How do you say, “Golden Ammo Box” in French? This past summer, after 10 successful years, they hung up the bass, drums, and guitar and played their last gig. If there's one country that is absolutely INSANE for geocaching, it's Germany. Thus it's only fitting that the final Geocache of the Week of 2017 is an EarthCache where two things come together. The Skagerrak and Kattegat seas collide in epic fashion at Grenen Beach in Northern Denmark, near the town of Skagen. Splashing waves from both directions create dangerous undercurrents. Although swimming is prohibited, you can safely put your feet in both seas at once from sandbanks where the two seas meet. To log this EarthCache, head to the tip of the sandbank and give your theory on why sand is deposited where the two seas meet. If you want to do a little extra, take a picture of your GPS or mobile device near the bank, or take a picture with your feet in both bodies of water. Lass Dich vom Wetter nicht davon abbringen, 2018 mit einem Geocaching-Highlight zu beginnen! Dieses Jahr legen wir die Messlatte höher: Finde einen Cache oder nimm am 31. Dezember oder 1. Januar an einem Event teil, um die Souvenirs “Letzter Cache von 2017” und “Erster Cache von 2018” zu erhalten. Wir haben Dir Vorschläge in einer Liste zusammengefasst, um Dir zu helfen, Deine Fundzahl zu erhöhen und Deine Souvenirsammlung zu erweitern, egal aus welchem Grund. Hitze Nimm viel Wasser mit. Geocaching kann harte Arbeit sein, also achte auf gute Flüssigkeitszufuhr. Es kann immer sein dass es länger dauert als gedacht, selbst wenn es nach einem schnellen Fund aussieht. Suche ein paar Paddelcaches. Das heiße Wetter ist die perfekte Zeit, Deine löchrige Statistik zu füllen und Geocaches in Wassernähe zu finden. Schnapp oder leih Dir ein Kanu, Kajak, Boot oder einen Reifen und schwimm los. Verstecke selbst einen Cache. Gehe in Deiner Nachbarschaft umher und erkunde Orte, an denen Du einen Geocache verstecken kannst und dann nichts wie nach drinnen und mit der Planung beginnen! Kälte Nimm Handwärmer mit. Die Suche in Baumstümpfen, unter Bänken und überall dazwischen kann bedeuten, dass Du einige Zeit ohne Handschuhe auskommen musst. Nimm Dir Handwärmer mit und halte Dich warm und sei bereit für den nächsten Cache. Halte ein warmes Getränk bereit. Denk an eine Thermoskanne, die Dein Getränk schön warm hält! Löse Rätsel-Caches. Wenn die Temperaturen unter Null sinken, kann es zu kalt sein, um draußen zu cachen. Setze Dich stattdessen drinnen an den Kamin und löse ein paar knackige Rätsel-Caches. Wenn das Wetter wieder wärmer wird, hast Du dann eine ganze Reihe neuer Geocaches, die Du finden kannst. Schneefall Bring ausreichend Hilfsmittel mit. Stifte schreiben bei extrem kaltem Wetter eventuell nicht mehr. Nimm vorsichtshalber einen Bleistift mit, damit Du unterschreiben und so Deinen Smiley sichern kannst. Auch eine Schaufel kann nützlich sein, wenn Du vorsichtig Schnee räumen musst, um Deinen Suchradius zu erweitern. Sei kreativ mit Deinen Fortbewegungsmethoden. Schnall Dir Schneeschuhe um, nimm Langlaufskier oder leihe ein Schneemobil, um stilvoll von Cache zu Cache zu gelangen. Falls Du ein Premiummitglied bist, kannst Du eine Pocket-Query unter Beachtung von Attributen erzeugen. Es gibt Attribute für “im Winter verfügbar”, “mit Schneemobil zu erreichen” und viel mehr! Erstelle eine Geocaching-Wunschliste. Wenn sich der Schnee draußen häuft, bleibe drin und plane Dein nächstes Geocaching-Abenteuer. Suche auf der Karte nach den Geocaches Deiner Träume – vielleicht an einem tollen Ort, mit einer seltenen Schwierigkeit/Gelände-Kombination, Caches die spezielles Werkzeug benötigen, oder besonders kreative Verstecke. Sammle diese Caches in einer Lesezeichenliste und suche sie später, wenn der Schnee schmilzt. Regenwetter Bring Ersatz-Logbücher mit. Niemand mag nasse, muffige Logbücher. Wenn Du unterwegs nasse Logbücher siehst, lege in den Cache ein zusätzliches trockenes Logbuch. Die Geocacher nach Dir und auch der Owner werden es Dir danken! Halte einen Regenschirm bereit. Schütze dich selbst vor dem Regen während Du den Cache suchst, und schütze das Logbuch vor dem Wasser während Du es unterschreibst. Trag Gummistiefel. Du weißt nie, wo Dich die Koordinaten hinführen. Achte daher auf gutes Schuhwerk, es könnte sein, dass ein schlammiger Pfad zum Cache führt. Extremes Wetter sollte dich nicht davon abhalten, Deiner Karte neue Smileys hinzuzufügen. Du kannst zwei neue Souvenirs verdienen, wenn Du dieses Jahr am 31. Dezember und am 1. Januar 2018 einen Geocache findest oder ein Event besuchst! Welche Tipps hast Du für extreme Wetterlagen?
