Many outdoor enthusiasts and geocachers have a special place in their hearts for mountains. Some are so iconic and renowned that their name alone evokes powerful images of the forces of nature. So get ready—for this Geocache of the Week, we’re finding GCQC4R, The Gateway to the Matterhorn Summit.

Originally featured in May 2015, this (literally) breathtaking geocache brings you over 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) above sea level and is not for the faint of heart; the terrain rating clocks in at a steep 4. As Sumpfschnorchler writes on the cache page, you’ll find the treasure near the Hörnli Hut, a large shelter with 130 beds in case you and all your friends get tired.

Once rested and determined, whip out the Geocaching® app or GPS device. From here, you know the drill! You’re looking for a suspicious pile of rocks, a crevice, anywhere that could fit the small wooden box that holds the cache. Close in on the coordinates, use your best geo-senses, and sign that logbook! By doing so, you join an elite club of 224 geocachers (at the time of writing). Congratulations!

As the name of the cache suggests, its locale is just before the most difficult segment of the Matterhorn. Enjoy those panoramic views of the Swiss Alps as you earn the smiley! Whether you summit the formidable mountain or decide to turn back after making the find, it’s a true win-win scenario.
