Geocache of the Week Flashback Edition: Riddarhuset

“Good things come in small packages.”

Sometimes the best geocaches are right under our noses. You start out looking for a container, but then you find yourself traveling back in time to a crucial part of history and discovering something new. With this gem in downtown Stockholm, you’ll find yourself sitting among nobles as you learn more about this popular historic location in Sweden’s capital!

This week, we’re taking our time machine back to the 17th century as we revisit GC18T59, a cache that we originally featured as our Geocache of the Week back in 2010. This cache is located at Riddarhuset, or “House of Nobility,” a building that has served many purposes over the years but remains a representation of the Swedish noble class. With over 11,000 finds, this cache has become a part of geocaching history and has put Riddarhuset on the map for many geocachers. Proving to be small but mighty, this geocache invites you to explore historic Stockholm with a closer eye.

The path to the cache is lined with other great sightseeing opportunities, as you traverse through Gamla Stan, the “Old Town” of Stockholm. Accessible by several footbridges, Gamla Stan boasts picturesque views of the city from all directions. En route to Riddarhuset, one might see the Grand Swedish parliamentary buildings, the Riddarholmen Church, and even the Royal Palace. Your grand tour of Stockholm will end at the towering statue of Gustav I, the leader of the Swedish War of Liberation, in front of the Riddarhuset building.

From there – cachers beware – as you will need to be extra stealthy in this muggle-laden area. Luckily, there’s a good chance that nearby tourists will be busy sightseeing, and you just might be able to blend in as you take pictures in front of the beautiful architecture of Riddarhuset.

The cache container is newly updated with gold camouflage that will have you feeling like a Swedish aristocrat! Of course, a triumphant photo with the cache container upon discovery is a must!

Since we first featured this Geocache of the Week in 2010, it has been adopted by user OneMatchFox from the original owner, Librex. It has also received nearly 10,000 new finds and has over 500 photos from geocachers who wanted to share their trip! The geocache has become a new part of the Riddarhuset history, and has inspired many visits to Galma Stan by geocachers from around the world.
